How To Calculate Wire Mesh Size And Weight?
The wire mesh specifications mainly depend on the wire diameter, hole size, and mesh count of the stainless steel wire mesh.
When purchasing stainless steel mesh, these are the areas that need attention. These parameters directly affect the performance and use of the wire mesh.
The following article introduces the basic parameters of wire mesh and woven mesh and how to measure mesh size and weight.
What Is Wire Mesh?
Wire mesh is a wire structure made of wire by weaving, welding, or stretching.
Here we mainly learn about metal wire mesh.
The materials of metal wire mesh: Iron wire, galvanized wire, stainless steel wire 304, 316, 316L, 430, 904L, 310S, 2205, 2507, copper wire, brass wire, nickel wire, titanium wire, Hastelloy wire, Inconel wire, Monel wire, nichrome wire, etc
Processing type: Welded, Crimped, Plain weave, Twill weave, Dutch weave, Twisted, Perforated, etc.
The shape of holes: Square holes, Diamond holes, hexagonal holes, round holes, etc.
Metal wire mesh is heat-resistant, acid-resistant, corrosion-resistant, strong, and beautiful. It can be used for construction, protection, decoration, filtration, separation, screening, etc.
Here we mainly learn about square hole woven mesh.
Among metal woven wire mesh, only plain weave wire mesh and twill weave wire mesh are square hole wire mesh.
What is woven wire mesh?
Metal woven wire mesh is a mesh structure woven from metal wires. It has excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, and easy processing properties, and is widely used in various fields.
Woven Type of Woven Wire Mesh
Plain weave and twill weave
Plain weave is the most common weaving method for stainless steel mesh. Each warp wire crosses up and down each weft wire, and the warp wire and weft wire are the same thickness. The warp wire and the weft wire are at a 90-degree angle. The mesh size is uniform.
Twill weave is another common weaving method after plain weave. Each warp wire crosses up and down every 2 weft wires, and each weft wire crosses up and down every 2 warp wires. The wire diameter is thicker than the plain weave, and all mesh surfaces are stronger.
From the weaving structure diagram above, we can see that the wire mesh is woven from many metal wires, and the mesh surface has many mesh holes.
How to Calculate Wire Mesh Size?
From the weaving structure diagram above, we can see that the wire mesh is woven from many metal wires, and the mesh surface has many mesh holes.
- The size of the mesh hole is called hole size, aperture;
- The diameter of the wire is called the wire diameter,
- The mesh count is the number of holes per inch. The larger the mesh count, the smaller the hole diameter.
For example, 50 mesh wire mesh means there are 50 holes per inch, and 500 mesh wire mesh means there are 500 holes per inch.
There is a direct relationship between the mesh count and the aperture.
The conversion relationship between count and aperture is mesh count = 25.4/(aperture+wire diameter).
For example:
60 mesh stainless steel 304 mesh, 0.15mm wire diameter, the aperture is (25.4/60)-0.15=0.2733mm
80 mesh 316L stainless steel wire cloth, 0.12mm wire diameter, the aperture is (25.4/80)-0.12=0.1975mm
Please note this conversion is only valid for plain and twill weave mesh.
The wire diameter can be measured with a micrometer by pulling out a piece of wire from the wire mesh for measurement.
The mesh count can be checked with the naked eye or a magnifying glass.
How to Calculate Open Area Of Woven Wire Mesh
The opening area reflects the effective filtration area of the woven wire mesh, which is the percentage of the area of the holes to the area of the mesh surface.
The opening area of a woven wire mesh can be calculated by the following formula:
The square of the aperture / the square of (aperture + wire diameter) x100% = opening area.
For example:
200 mesh 316 stainless steel screen, 0.05mm wire diameter, 0.077mm hole size.
The opening area is (0.077×0.077)/[(0.05+0.077)x(0.05+0.077)]x100%=36.65%
20 mesh 316 stainless steel screen, 0.4mm wire diameter, 0.87mm hole size.
The opening area is (0.87×0.87)/[(0.4+0.87)x(0.4+0.87)]x100%=47%
It should be noted that this formula only valid for square hole wire mesh, which means only plain weave and twill weave wire mesh.
What is mesh size of 1 micron?
1 micron wire mesh means the aperture(hole size) of the wire mesh is 1 micron, it is the finest stainless steel woven wire mesh.
Material: 316L stainless steel
Mesh count: 500×3500 mesh
Aperture: 1 micron
Roll size: 1mx30m, 1.2mx30m, etc
1 micron stainless steel mesh has a wide range of applications:
- Precision pressure filter,
- Fuel filtration,
- Vacuum filter,
- Aerospace,
- Oil refining,
- Pharmaceutical,
- Petrochemical,
- Chemical fiber,
- Metallurgy,
- Scientific research, etc.
In addition, the material stainless steel 316L, has particularly strong acid and alkali resistance, ensuring the reliability of use in extreme environments.
The 1 micron wire mesh has excellent corrosion resistance and wear resistance, so it can operate stably for a long time in various harsh working environments, ensuring the quality and safety of the product.
What mesh size is 100 micron?
100 micron mesh sizes means the aperture(hole size) of the wire mesh is 100 micron, usually, the 100 micron stainless steel mesh is a 150 mesh stainless steel mesh.
100 micron stainless steel mesh can also be a wire mesh with other mesh numbers and wire diameters. It needs to be calculated according to the specific situation.
Characteristics of 100 micron stainless steel wire mesh:
- Uniform mesh.
- Good filtration accuracy.
- Good corrosion resistance
- Strong and durable.
- Good acid resistance, and alkali resistance.
- High temperature resistance.
- Strong tensile strength and wear resistance.
How to Calculate Wire Mesh Weight?
The Weight of Plain/Twill Weave Stainless Steel Wire Mesh per Square Meter (kg) = (Wire Diameter × Wire Diameter × Mesh Count ÷ 2)
The Weight of Dutch Weave Wire Mesh per Square Meter (kg) = [Weft Wire Diameter × Weft Wire Diameter × Weft Mesh Count × 0.25 + Warp Wire Diameter × Warp Wire Diameter × Warp Mesh Count × 0.25]
These Wire Mesh Weight involved include wire diameter, mesh count, length, width, etc.
The specific values of these parameters need to be determined according to the actual wire mesh specifications.
For example:
100 mesh 304 stainless steel wire mesh, 0.1mm wire diameter, 1mx30m.
Weight is 0.1×0.1×100/2x1x30=15KG
200 mesh copper wire mesh, 0.05mm wire diameter, 1.2mx30m.
Weight is 0.05×0.05×200/2x1x30/7.9×8.9=8.45KG
The copper and stainless steel have different densities, The weight calculation formula is for stainless steel mesh, so it needs to be converted. The density of stainless steel is 7.9, and the density of copper is 8.9.
For the Dutch weave wire mesh,
50×250 mesh, 0.14mmx0.114mm wire diameter, 1mx30m.
Weight is (50×0.14×0.14×0.25+250x250x0.114×0.25)x1x30=31.7KG
